Jan uses a multi-layered process to bring out the items in a photograph that are sometimes lost. The feelings, emotions, and impressions that were felt in a beautiful moment are slowly brought back until she believes the picture is depicting what she saw. She wants the picture to remind her of the moment and she expresses this through her work. Jan uses her computer, a Wacom-brand graphics tablet, pressure-sensitive pen and digital airbrush to sketch and paint the images she has taken. In addition to her sketching and painting, she still enjoys and displays untouched photography.

She has received awards from the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, St. Joseph, MO, the Columbia Art League, Columbia, MO, the Missouri 50 Fine Arts Exhibition at the Missouri State Fair, her work has been used in Mizzou Alumni Association calendars for 2008 to 2010; also, several of her photographs currently hang on the wall at Rendezvous Coffeehouse on West Broadway, Columbia, MO.

For over ten years before her retirement from 25 years of teaching, Jan created digital photographs to enhance projects in the classroom as a teacher and technology trainer, designing both web sites and educational materials for students and adults in the St. Joseph, Missouri, School District. Jan has a Masters Degree in Education in Information Science and Learning Technologies from Missouri University, Columbia, Missouri. Watercolor painting and sketching was her leisure activity during those years.

Jan is married to author and poet, James H. Coffman. She enjoys living close to her children and their families: John, Elizabeth, and Jim.
