First Friday with the Arts will be BACK on February 5th from 5:00 – 9:00 pm with our second annual Cookie Spree! Head to Downtown Cape Girardeau for an evening out with your family as you enjoy not only local artwork but also delicious cookies. There will be colorful cookies, historic recipes, and family favorites available. That night we will be passing out handouts listing each locations cookie flavors. Many of your favorite galleries and businesses will be open for the event, plus a few new faces to First Friday!   This will be a special Stamp Card Event featuring an offer from our Friend of the Arts: Chocolate Works! Pick up a free stamp card from any of the participating locations, and receive 7 Stamps to be eligible for 5 FREE truffles!     Thank you to our First Friday partners listed below, who will be open from 5-9 pm (unless otherwise stated), as well as to our other Friends of the Arts: Old Town Cape, C.P. Arts Council of Southeast Missouri 32 North Main Street Cookies: Chick Fil A’s Chocolate Chunk Cookies

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri presents an opening reception for the 16th Annual Children’s Arts Festival from 4:00 – 8:00 pm! This much loved exhibit features visual art pieces and poetry by children from 23 regional schools. The show is juried, and the top 8 entries in age group, from 3rd grade to 8th grade, are featured in a booklet distributed at the event. The student poetry section will also be continued. Students were prompted to write a poem about what they would be, in their wildest imaginations.   Cookies will be provided for guests, courtesy of Chick-Fil-A, and juice boxes will be available, thanks to McDonalds.   Thank you to the local sponsors of this event: Sam’s Club FoundationWalmartSoutheast HealthCape Radiology GroupAlliance BankHorst Pharmacy, and Wood and Huston Bank.

The Visual Arts Cooperative will also debut new works in their gallery space at the Arts Council. Window exhibitors for the month of February will be Phil Nash and Juanita Wyman.

The Gallery: Visiting artist Megan Singleton from Saint Louis, Missouri will be showing her latest artwork in the exhibition titled, “To Rest Without Sinking.” Her installations crisscross the boundaries of contemporary craft, combining sculpture, hand papermaking, and digital applications. The Shoppe: The featured vendor, Ortmann Woodcraft, will be bringing his entire stock of items. Jon and Debbie Ortmann will be turning pieces on the spot so you can see how the items are made! A giveaway of a handmade pen with a free engraving will take place at 8:45 pm.

 

The Catapult Creative House Student Studios is an interactive arts space featuring student artists from Southeast Missouri State University Department of Art. These artists use the interactive arts space to combine an exploration of the professional side of art making with an interest in community involvement. As a part of the Cape Girardeau Arts Community, the Catapult Creative House Student Studio artists hold monthly exhibitions highlighting current work.

The River Campus Art Gallery presents an Art Educators’ Exhibition. Carol Horst, Department of Art instructor, hosts this exhibition for high school art teachers in the region to coincide with the Annual High School Art Exhibition on display concurrently in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum. The exhibition will be on display until the 25th with two opening receptions: First Friday from 5 – 7 pm and February 7th from Noon – 2pm. While you are at the River Campus, please stop by the Dobbins Hall Way Gallery to view artwork by Hafiza Khan. The exhibition is called “East Meets West,” and Khan says she is a hybrid, created from bits and pieces of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and America. Likewise, she holds that her mostly mixed media canvases reflect a very eclectic style in their amalgamation of cultural imagery and material from different parts of the world. The reception will be from 5-7 pm.

Jazz Festival Gala Concert Bedell Performance Hall, River Campus

An evening of exciting jazz as the great trumpeter Bob Lark will join the students in this highly anticipated jazz performance. Lark has recorded with top names in the jazz world and serves as professor of Jazz Studies at DePaul University. Under his direction The DePaul University Jazz Ensemble has produced several outstanding performance awards and has recorded albums with legendary jazz artists Phil Woods, Clark Terry, Louie Bellson and Jim McNeely. 5th Annual Cross Rivers Roots & Blues Festival Port Cape Girardeau

23rd Annual Women in the Arts Gallery Show Deadline for Entries: February 11, 2016

The Craft Studio is now taking submissions for the 23rd annual Women in the Arts Gallery Show. The Women in the Arts show highlights the recent work of talented women artists. In conjunction with Women’s History Month at the University of Missouri, the Craft Studio presents this exhibit as a tribute to women, past, present, and future whose artistic creations are often overlooked and forgotten.   We are honored to have Missouri native, artist, professor, and Bingham Gallery Director, Hannah Reeves as our 2016 juror. She will be selecting both professional and student work as well as a mix of two and three-dimensional works for exhibit. All women, 18 years of age and older are eligible to submit their work for consideration.

Equality Matters – Conversations on Gender and Race Deadline for Entries: February 15, 2016

The exhibition will take place during WWU’s Equality Matters-Conversations on Gender and Race Symposium, which premieres in March 2016. Artists are invited to submit art that explores their understanding on how issues of gender and race influence contemporary culture. Open to artists and art students in the Midwest (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin). Jurors: Dion Dion, Sharon Kilfoyle, and Kenny Green. Art is Ageless Deadline for Entries: February 15, 2016

Paper Entry Forms are currently available at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri. Exhibit: February 17-19, 2016 at the Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America in Farmington, MO.
