Don Brown - Decoy Artist

I was raised in St. Joseph, Missouri. At an early age, I began to help my father make and paint cork and wooden decoys to hunt over. In the mid-1950s I started to make my own style of wooden decoys while continuing to make cork and wooden hunting decoys. My first sale of mantle quality decoys, a pair of mallards, went to a collector in 1957.

Making, showing, and selling decoys became a serious hobby in 1973. I have participated in many Missouri art shows in Springfield, the Kansas City area, and the St. Louis area. Beginning in 1975 I was a regular exhibitor at the National Wildlife Art Show in the Kansas City area. The decoys have claimed a few "Best of Show" ribbons over the years.

My decoys have been presented as awards and gifts to many individuals, including President George H. W. Bush when visiting in Springfield. I have received national and state awards for donations of decoys to fundraisers for Ducks Unlimited. Now retired from careers in the military and as a pharmacist, I devote full-time to decoy making, other wild fowl art, traveling, grandchildren, hunting, and fishing…(Not necessarily in that order).
