Juried BOMH artist Greg Kluempers – Blog Update – November 2015

Hello,

The last six or seven months have been very exciting. I participated in a photo workshop in May at Monument Valley with stops in Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico. In June, I was in Washington and Oregon shooting the coast, Columbia River Gorge and the Palouse area in Washington. In October I made another trip to Colorado and saw the most amazing sunset of my life. In Missouri I visited the Ozarks Scenic Riverways area twice, St. Charles, Hermann and New Haven. In Illinois I did some shooting in Alton and Grafton.

The Monument Valley trip in the spring offered many opportunities to capture classic southwest and historic images from that area.

Monument Valley (Navajo: Tse Bii Ndzisgaii, meaning valley of the rocks) is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 1,000 ft (300 m) above the valley floor. It is located on the Arizona-Utah state line, near the Four Corners area. The valley lies within the range of the Navajo Nation Reservation and is accessible from U.S. Highway 163.

While in New Mexico I spent some time driving along Old Route 66.

Of course while in the area I couldn’t resist getting new images of my two favorite narrow gauge railroads.

In Washington I have wanted to go to the Palouse area to photograph the farms and rolling hills of crops.  While there I also took advantage of shooting the Oregon coast and Columbia River Gorge.

In October I was back in Colorado chasing fall colors. The highlight of that trip was a Sunset in the Ohio Pass area. This was one of the most amazing sunsets that I have ever witnessed. A storm was rolling in and the colors started changing in the east and spread to an unbelievable color display for 360 degrees. It seems like it continued for half an hour.

Finally back in Missouri and Illinois. I visited the Ozarks Scenic Riverways area twice, once in the spring and then in the fall. My mission was to get some shots of the historic mills, springs and the wild horses.

“You don’t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.”        – Ansel Adams
