The Approach of Night

I was inspired to do this painting from the landscape and dwellings I saw when I visited Mesa Verde a few years ago. This was originally to be a scene that captured the full sun of midday, but after I had begun with the initial layers of paint, I sensed that I should make this a nocturnal scene. I created a dynamic contrast between the quiet and solitude associated with night and the landscape, which is alive and bursting with an energy that is said to permeate the region.
