About Our Art
In 1997, Leslie Compass took a beginner’s mosaic class taught by a talented artist and friend, Fr. Pat Wissman. After that, her love & passion for the art of mosaics began. Drawing inspiration from beauty and colors surrounding us, Compass creates pieces from the heart. She uses found objects to create everything from drink coasters to wall art. Compass uses pieces of glass, tile, beads, marbles and sometimes recycled materials to create original pieces of art. In 2002, Compass partnered with her best friend, Marti Hartle and began creating mosaics in the basement of Compass’s home. Over the last 10 years Compass & Hartle have traveled all over the state of Missouri selling and displaying their pieces at different art shows & wineries. On a visit to a local art gallery in Cape Girardeau, MO, Compass and Hartle realized that they needed a space to call their own. So in September of 2010, MoZaic Art Studio, a Collage of Artists opened in historic Downtown Cape Girardeau and many walked through for their grand opening celebration. The studio is an inviting place where local artists can proudly display their creations and make them more readily available for purchase. The collage of both experienced and novice artists work together and help educate the community on the importance of the arts and supporting local businesses. In addition to the MoZaic Art Studio, Compass is a member of The Cat Ranch Art Guild, The Around Town Group, The Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce and Best of Missouri Hands. When she?s not busy creating mosaics, Compass works full time as a nurse. She enjoys spending time with her husband, Greg, going for motorcycle rides, camping & walking their two dogs. Compass has two daughters, Renee and Hayley, a son in law, DJ and two grandchildren, Isaac and Cadence. Compass resides in Scott City.
