About Our Art
2006-I am excited to have just become a new member of the Best of Missouri Hands. Six months ago I moved to Missouri from Kentucky, where I belonged to the Shelltowee Artisans guild. There I lived a simple rural lifestyle in the Cumberland Mountains, similar to how I live now in the Missouri Ozarks.
Since 2000, I have been weaving hammocks in my home workshop, using hand-made wooden jigs. I learned the process from people at Twin Oaks Community in Virginia who have been supporting themselves with hammock making for 35 years. The style comes from the traditional southern rope hammocks produced by fisherman of South Carolina. A few years go I expanded my business by making woven hanging chairs as well as hammocks. Now I’m beginning to experiment with variations of color patterns in my work.
Before making hammocks I grew organic vegetables on a weekly basis for 15 families. I studied Horticulture at the University of Kentucky, worked in a nursery business for 10 years, built my own house, backpacked across Newfoundland and cycled from London to Edinburgh. I love to hike, kayak, travel and experience other cultures and food.
