About Us

About Our Art

Graduating from Washington University, St. Louis, in 1967 with a BFA in Graphic Design and Illustration, I pursued a career path in commercial art for 20 years. It included running my own graphic design business called India Inc., working as production coordinator and art director for two major St. Louis advertising agencies, and freelancing under the name Nell Graphics.

In the late 1970’s I began searching for new mediums of artistic expression to more fully explore my creative abilities. I took weaving at Craft Alliance; serigraphy at Maryville University with Sister Gin O’Meara; and papermaking with Tom Lang at Webster University, 1986-87. From 1997-2000 I took both undergraduate and graduate classes in metal-smithing with Paulette Myers at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville.

Presently I am working dimensionally in metal, wood, paint and found objects. I am a collector of small treasures including semi-precious stones, beads, seashells, beach glass, pods, bone, printed papers, small plastic parts and exotic hardwoods. I find it challenging to think of ways to incorporate these elements into my artwork.

Combining the clean lines of contemporary design with more flowing, nature-oriented elements creates tension and excitement in my work. Sometimes I add moveable parts or something unexpected for fun and surprise.
