The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri Staff has recently returned from a trip to Chicago for the 2015 Americans for the Arts Convention. Thank you so much to Missouri Association of Community Arts Agencies for sending us and giving us the opportunity to learn from other artists, arts administrators, and communities across the United States!

We took close notes from the main convention and a Public Art and Placemaking Preconference – bringing back practical knowledge and skills, and also learning of many inspiring public art projects that I would love to share with you! From permanent pieces like the Bayview Rise grain elevator illuminated mural in San Francisco, the Westmoreland Nature Play area in Portland, Oregon, the expansive Quill by Christian Moeller in Arlington, Vermont, and a swim-free Backyard Pool in Long Island to temporary works like CREATE: The Community Meal in St. Paul, Minneapolis and the installation Congregation, by Kit Monkman and Tom Wexler in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is too difficult to choose a favorite!

Beyond single projects, I found organizations with an outlook to emulate, namely the Chicago Public Art Group and the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia. I recognize Southeast Missouri might not have the same size cities, but that we have the ability to make impressive projects involving our artists and our community!

The River Campus Summer Arts Festival is back for its second year this Saturday, June 20th. This event, from 10 am – 5 pm, is a family friendly event filled with performances, activities, music, art exhibits, and artistic vendors!  Below we have listed a few highlights from the day (and week).
