Pushing the Flywheel, the official blog of Artist INC, is an ongoing resource for Midwest regional artists.  For Artist INC alumni, “pushing the flywheel” is not only the final lesson of the Artist INC workshop, it represents the hard work and eventual momentum

that comes as they take control of their careers.

You know better than anyone that alternative financial resources for artists are needed. That is why we need to hear from you!  We invite you to participate in an important Artist Business Needs Survey. The deadline to complete the survey is Wednesday, July 22. The survey should only take 5-10 minutes to complete.

Artist INC Advance artists and their peers work together to use the skills and concepts introduced in Artist INC Live and apply them systematically to a specific project each artist has chosen to pursue.   Over the course of ten weeks (8 class sessions + Final Presentation night), artists will focus on specific skills and apply them to the creation of an in-depth proposal for their individual projects. Deadline: August 10

Coloratura: Explorations of Music & Art is a transmedia project that combines visual art and music by converting paint brushes and canvas into a midi controller that can create and manipulate live music. This synesthetic experience will take place in Oppenstein Park on July 16th, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

AI Fellow Nick Carswell’s Carswell & Hope, an alt-rock four piece from Lawrence (with an frontman hailing from Ireland), will perform a special public concert in Oppenstein Park in Downtown KC, Thursday 30th July, 11.30am – 1.30pm. The show is accompanied by an interactive art installation as part of Art in the Loop public art project.

Escape to Create is a nationally recognized multidisciplinary artist residency hosted by the Seaside, Florida community since 1993.  Two multi-disciplinary sessions, Jan 4 – 29 or Feb 1 – 26 are open to professional artists and scholars working in literary, music and theatre arts; visual, multi-media and interdisciplinary arts; scholars of architecture, history, and environmental and cultural studies. Deadline: July 20

The Audre Lorde & Frank O’Hara Prize for Poetry is a competition established by The Literary Preserve. The competition is open to poets for a manuscript of original poetry in English. The winner receives $1000, and publication and distribution of the winning manuscript by Oia Arts Press, an imprint of The LGBTQ Literary Preserve. 

Deadline: July 17  

 

Guggenheim Fellowships are intended for men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts. Guggenheim Fellowships are grants to selected individuals made for a minimum of six months and a maximum of twelve months. Deadline: September 19

The ArtWalk is an experience where event-goers can peruse a variety of artworks at the Chesterfield Amphitheater, located in St. Louis County. The walk is next to an open-air Amphitheater that is completely unique to the St. Louis Region. A juried event, the Budweiser Taste of St. Louis showcases local and regional Fine Art and Artisans.

Opening July 17, PLUG Projects presents Personal Space, an exhibition featuring the work of California-based artists Amy Garofano and Cybele Lyle and vagueperimeters, a solo exhibition featuring the Kansas City-based artist Annie Woodfill. Exhibition Opening: July 17 from 6-9 PM.
