The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri would like to welcome students of all ages on their adventures back to school! What sounds better than colorful new notebooks, pencils, folders and art supplies? After all, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”

Do you know to whom this quote is attributed to? No? Here’s a hint:

The benefits of art in education are numerous and backed by rigorous research. Americans for the Arts has published a comprehensive e-book Facts and Figures on the data available, as well as a video highlighting some of those key-data points. Here are a few statistics we found noteworthy, taken from Facts and Figures:

One discipline that sometimes gets lost in the conversation of band, art class, and creative writing is POETRY! We were pleased to find “Adventures in Anaphora” by Rebecca Hazelton linked in a recent email newsletter from the Poetry Foundation.

In the article, Hazelton walks the reader through how using anaphora in poetry can help her students, new and advanced, develop their own poetry. It is developed with many fantastic examples, including political speeches given by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Barack Obama, Winston Churchill and Homer Simpson! She also referenced the following poems:

“Howl,” by Allen Ginsberg

“Song of Myself,” by Walt Whitman

“I Remember,” by Joe Brainard

“The Delight Song of Tsoai-talee,” by N. Scott Momaday

“Hospital parking lot, April,” by Laura Kasischke

“Some Feel Rain,” by Joanna Klink

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri supports arts education through various programming, including our Children’s Arts Festival, ArtReach, Poetry Out Loud, and the Summer Art Academy.

Students (of all ages) who want to continue to learn the arts outside of school have growing opportunities here in Southeast Missouri – they can learn acting and dancing from On Cue Performing Arts Studio, enroll for the Music Academy at SEMO, ask Shivelbine’s Music for instructor suggestions, or take lessons in the visual arts at various studios: Open Window, Cateye Glasses, The Artist Studio, and with Dave Carter. This is all in addition to the fantastic weekly arts resources provided by the Cape Public Library.

The Board of Directors and Staff of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri would like to thank our interns, Samantha Schaefer and Britney Hubbard, for their assistance this summer! In addition to having them stack and un-stack our chairs and fold our letters, they had significant personal projects they worked on throughout the summer.

Samantha has used her graphic design skills to undertake the task of updating the comprehensive Cape Girardeau Public Art Booklet from 2012. This consisted of a new design layout, new photographs for many of the pieces, and a few new details as well. We will be getting the updated version to you later this fall! Samantha will be graduating this semester from Southeast Missouri State University with her BFA, and we will keep you posted with the date of her show as it approaches.

Britney has focused on keeping our social media up-to-date and full of interesting posts (her Art History posts are favorites within the office). She has been a huge help getting information about the arts out on Twitter and Facebook, not to mention completely reviving our Instagram and Pinterest! Fortunately, Britney has agreed to be a Social Media Correspondent for us and will continue to help out throughout the year as she studies at the University of Missouri.
