Presenting in June !!!!

Charles Dana

As of last month I became a middle aged (73) photographer who retains the vision of youth but am rather well tempered by the passage of time.  I live in St. Louis city and my photographs of bugs and plants are all taken within about two miles of my home although I am fortunate to have the botanical garden within walking distance.

I have been involved with photography for over 50 years and I made the traumatic change from film to digital about six years ago.  I miss the magic of the dark room but do not miss the smell of chemicals and find the processing of digital images to be much less stressful and the ability to process color images without having to hold water temperatures to within a half degree to be a miracle.

I try to capture my subjects with a simple, focused clarity of vision while striving to follow the path of the Impressionist painters in using light, color and form.  I mainly shoot with a 100mm macro lens at near wide open apertures – this blurs out my backgrounds while I strive to direct attention with the placement of the point of focus.  I strive to, and some time achieve, capturing that thing that I call the soul of my subjects.

I print my own images (well except for a few large ones) on water color paper.  My post processing consists of cleaning up images (dust spots, etc.) and adjusting contrast, exposure, color and saturation.  My backgrounds are as shot and I never combine multiple images.  I do my own mat cutting and framing.

Lee Richards

I have been involved in the arts my entire life whether it was playing flute in the school band, creating “masterpieces” in art class or taking a fieldtrip to a local art museum.  I was exposed to a variety of cultures growing up as a “military brat”. Due to the adventurous spirit of my mom and dad, I was never allowed to sit on the sidelines and just watch.  I was led, sometimes reluctantly, into all the experiences that my surrounding environment could provide in the short period of time we would remain there. As a result I was exposed to a plethora of cultures, art forms and life experiences that laid the ground work for the art I create and the artist I have become.

As a non-traditional married student, I earned a Bachelor degree in Metals at Ball State University. While exploring the many avenues of artistic expression that the art department had to offer, I fell in love with fiber and metals. Each medium offers a myriad of design and texture possibilities which are not mutually exclusive. I love to play with texture as is evident in all my pieces. I find precious metal wire lends a wonderful texture to the semi-precious stones, glass and other elements that I use to create my jewelry designs. As a former weaving major in college I find it very satisfying and almost “thread like” in the way the wire can be manipulated into a final one-of-a-kind piece of wearable art. I recently have begun explore the ancient technique of Viking knit as a method of making unique bracelets and other pieces. It has some great possibilities.

At present I participate in 22-24 art shows a year and have been privileged to receive a few awards along the way. Among those awards are Best of Show in Effingham Art Show, Effingham, IL; 1st place in 3-D at River Arts Festival, Hannibal, MO; 2nd place in 3-D at Christmas in July Show, Sedalia, MO as well as others.  I belong to three great art organizations. I am a juried member of Greater St. Louis Artist Association (GSLAA) and juried member of Best of Missouri Hands (BOMH),  as well as Membership Chair for the Society for Midwest Metalsmiths (SMM).

I would not have been able to accomplish any of this without the undying support of my business partner and loving husband of 35 years. His full time job has allowed me the freedom to explore this new career path unfettered. After watching my two beautiful daughters blossom into wonderful young women with lives and families of their own, I find myself enjoying my new role as a full time artist. My life has been and continues to be a wonderful adventure.

FEATURED ARTIST
Steve Bunton

Steve Bunton graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1972 with an art degree in teaching.  He taught elementary art for 37 years, and has been a studio artist for many of those years, concentrating his endeavors in clay.
He has exhibited in many juried art fairs and won several top awards.

His present direction is in altering the clay form, once thrown on the potter’s wheel and adding rich textures and patterns in the semi-soft clay surface, one mark at a time.

He enjoys the way objects and tools, some found and others made, interact with the clay to make those rich textures.  It is a time-consuming process, but well worth the effort.

Embellishments of clay, often reflecting organic inspirations from nature add distinct details to his work. A palette of only a few carefully selected colored glazes complement the warm tones found in the stoneware clay, stained with iron oxide.

NEW MEMBERS
David Gaynor:

David joined GSLAA in June. Currently living in Manchester, England, David plans to relocated to St. Louis In a few months.  On May 29th, David exhibited at Paint St. Louis. The following day he presented a seminar on Travel Photography.  The new name of David’s company is Papyrus Images.

Linda Payne:

I am primarily an oil painter and a transplant to St. Louis since 1997.  Prior to moving here, I was a featured artist in several gallery walk events, dinner theater and coffee house exhibits, and a number of juried art festivals.  I also enjoyed chairing the Grant Writing Committee for our local art center, and wrote successful arts education grants to bring nationally recognized artists to our area for workshops.  I also wrote PSA and corporate grants.

I enjoyed participating in GSLAA’s Art Happening and the St. Louis Fall Festival of Art (1999, 2001, 2002, 2003), Shaw Art Fair (2000), Mosaics Art Festival (1999, 2000), Parker’s Table exhibit at the Clayton Art Fair (2000), a 3 woman art exhibit at Lee Klein’s Art Studio in Clayton (2003) and the Foundry Art Centre Landscape Exhibition (2005).  In between these events and my work as a paralegal in the Clayton area, I accepted painting commissions.  I was inactive in art for a while due to my mother’s failing health, work demands and my own battle with breast cancer.  I retired from the legal field in 2013, have excellent health once again and am enthusiastically celebrating life in art.

I have oil paintings and giclee prints of oil paintings for sale. I am currently building my inventory and working on several landscape paintings now.  I probably will not have sufficient inventory to market at an art fair until next spring.  As a result, I have not recently applied for admission to any juried art fairs.

I am currently (and have been for over a year now) giving private oil painting lessons to an attorney in Clayton at her office bi-monthly.

WORKSHOP OPPORTUNITIES
Mary Mosblech is teaching a printmaking class at Jacoby Art Center in Alton, IL, on Saturday, June 27

In this 3 hour workshop you’ll learn two simple (but awesome) printing techniques and enjoy a relaxing afternoon of fun, creative activity. You’ll go home with 10 original prints that cam be matted and framed, or used as designs for cards or note cards.

This hands-on workshop is an introduction to the unique features and aesthetic possibilities of the monotype and linocut print processes. (Mono-prints or monotypes are basically printed paintings or drawings). You’ll create 10 different mono prints on a 5-inch acrylic plate, using your choice of different colors.

Your introduction to the linocut process involves learning to crate and carve an image on a 5-inch linoleum plate, and printing 1 image at a time in black on top of your mono print. If you like, bring a design or image for inspiration or to copy.

Your finished artwork will be at a two-layer print created by combing these two printing techniques. The first (background) layer will be the mono print image. The second layer (printed over your monotyple background) will be your linocut print image.

For further information, call the Jacoby Art Center at

618-462-5222.

Sandy Brooks will be teaching a colored pencil class at the Missouri Artist on Main in St. Charles.  Learn the art of drawing with colored pencils with nationally known Sandy Brooks. This is a 3 hour workshop to learn the method Sandy finds successful for her beautiful colored pencil drawings.

Time: 9am – 12am
Cost: $45 plus supplies.
Contact Sandy Brooks 314 965 4975 or Missouri Artists on Main 636 724 1260
