August 2015

Lake Studio for the Arts is a facility for visual artists to teach, learn, create and inspire each other.

16533 N. State Highway 5 Suite 201 Sunrise Beach, MO 65079

Summer at the Lake – and what an interesting summer it has been! Due to downpours of rain and flooding boating and swimming have been restricted, but gardening has been rather delightful. Family and friends have arrived, and we caught up on news during barbeques.

How to find the studio: From Osage Beach or Camdenton – Take Hwy. 5 north from Hwy. 54 approximately 17 miles. We are about 2.5 miles after the Hurricane Deck Bridge. Turn left into entrance drive just before Hurricane Deck School.

From the North – drive south on Hwy. 5 past Laurie about 2 miles. Turn right onto Sunrise City Center entrance drive just past Lake Rd. 5-32 and the Fire Station.

From the toll bridge – Continue on MM to junction at TT road. Turn left on TT and stay right when road merges with F, to the stoplight at Hwy. 5 (Woods grocery). Turn right onto Hwy. 5 and continue north about 1 1/2 mile. Turn left onto entrance drive just before Hurricane Deck School.

There have been great joys and great sorrows in our group – I got to have the joy in the birth of our new grandson, Brennan Zane Williams, who arrived right on time July 23.

My friend and regular designer of this newsletter Lila Rudolph had to say goodbye to her dear sister who passed this month. Our condolences to Lila and her family.

With all the busy-ness of summer, July classes at the Studio were scaled back. Knitting queen Jackie Hughes faithfully showed up every Tuesday and Saturday afternoon for her sessions, and we made great progress on our projects. Not everyone knits at these classes – some crochet and needlepoint, but we do it together, which motivates us to continue working (and laughing). Everyone is welcome.

DeAnna Amos (finally) taught her “Lotions and Potions” class July 26, and it’s safe to say it exceeded everyone’s expectations. DeAnna teaches these classes in Sedalia at State Fair Community College, and is a valuable local resource We got to mix scrumptious ingredients and make our own soap, lotion bar, shampoo, hair rinse, laundry detergent, and got an entire notebook of recipes to make at home. I got the hard water stains out of my toilet with a secret ingredient she will share in an upcoming class, so be sure to sign up – we are all coming back to do it again, it was so much fun. Thanks so much, DeAnna!

Creativity is contagious. Pass it on.

In addition to the classes at the Studio, we have expanded to participate in the First Friday Community Series at Unity at the Lake. The August performance will be Friday, August 7, and artist Carol Anderson will be exhibiting her work at the Unity Church at 5:45. Her one-of-a kind pieces will be for sale at that event. The musicians, a Tenor and a Lutist, who have won Grammy’s and performed worldwide, will begin at 7:00. This is a very unique opportunity for our area, and I encourage you to come.

Tina Campbell will be back on Wednesday, August 12 for another Art Journaling class. This is a basic class good for ALL ages. All supplies will be provided.

If you love to knit, we are having a workshop Friday, August 14 with Lisa Ellison from Rogersville. She will be teaching some advanced stitches (Fair Isle and Brioche) and there will be a yarn sale.

On Sunday, August 16, come learn some basic beginning herbal skills with Tina Campbell. She will teach you how to create infusions, decoctions, infused vinegars & oils, liniments and tinctures. There will be plenty of ideas presented on how to use each, plus you will take home some of what is made.

On Thursday, August 20 we will be resuming our painting parties with Tracy Sutton from Inspired Brushes at Sunrise Cantina. These evenings are fun and we always go home with a wine glass or mug that’s personally meaningful for ourselves or as a gift.

On Friday, August 28, the Studio will be having an open reception for author Bambi Shen. Bambi will be autographing her memoir The Uncrushable Rose and the Studio will be full of artists: Yetta McConnell’s jewelry, Loren Woodard’s woodcarving, Bill Wood’s acrylic paintings, and Bonnie Black’s fiber art. Drinks and appetizers will be served. This is in conjunction with Bambi’s Creative Writing workshop on Saturday, which will cover how to publish your life story online. If you are interested in this workshop, call Jackie Hughes at 972-689-2266. On Saturday, September 5, Bonnie Black will be in the studio teaching us how to make beautiful beaded Tree of Life pendants.

The Studio’s list of contacts continues to grow as more and more people are discovering the value of continued learning as we age. What could be more fun than learning a new way to create??? Doctors and psychologists are prescribing classes to their patients for mental and even physical health (it’s cheaper than therapy!). So get a friend to join you, check out the upcoming classes, and make the call to enroll. You will be glad you did.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer. Check out the Lake Arts Council website and Facebook page to stay abreast of their activities. The arts are flourishing at the Lake.
