American Woodturner Journal Feature – Dan Burleson

I had the privilege of having two of my basket illusion pieces featured on the inside front cover of the American Woodturner Journal of the American Association of Woodturners (AAW) April 2016 Vol 31 no 2 woodturning.org.  There were some great Basket Illusionists also featured along with a friend of mine Harvey Meyer from Atlanta.

I have continued with the weaving series of my basket illusion pieces by weaving different material onto the wood.

The split turned vase is made from maple and reed 7 1/2” tall and 6 1/2” wide. Price $750  The pattern matches inside and out with reed woven in between the two piece.  It started as a solid piece of wood then I hollowed it out and split it into two pieces did all the carving, burning and dying the pattern with India ink.  I fit the two pieces back together with round reed material and wove half round reed around it.

The bowl is from maple and reed 4” tall and 9 1/2” wide. Price is $350  I dyed the pattern with India ink using a paint brush then wove reed material around the top then dyed with cyan inkjet printer ink.
