The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host a reception for the students of Southeast Missouri State University’s 2015 Summer Art Academy. The show will be on display until August 29.

This year the Summer Art Academy featured an extensive list of workshop offerings from 14 local elementary and high school art teachers, and professors from the University. Classes included Children’s Ceramics, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, as well as courses focused needle felting and monster-creating.  Adult classes were also offered during the Academy, and pieces from these classes will be displayed during the exhibit as well.

In addition to the course offerings at the Southeast Missouri State University campus, coordinators of the Summer Art Academy also sponsored “Painting with the Elderly” at several local nursing homes. Residents of Chateau Girardeau, Jackson Manor, and Cape Heartland Rehab, participated in the workshops, and their work will be displayed during a month-long exhibit on the “Community Wall” at the Arts Council.

Further children’s artwork will be on display highlighting work created through the ArtReach program, an afterschool art program held for underserved students ages 6 – 15 at four different locations throughout Cape Girardeau. ArtReach is a partnership program between the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri and Southeast Missouri State University.

The Visual Arts Cooperative will also debut new works in their gallery space at the Arts Council, and window exhibitors for August are Brenda Seyer and Sarah Cochrane.

When Jonathan Patterson digs into a new project, he is contentedly lost for hours rendering the details and character of the world around him. Cityscapes, mythical creatures, cartoons, leitmotifs, historical buildings, flora, fauna, and the abstract- everything is fascinating in its intricacy and storytelling. Jonathan’s favorite medium is pen-and-ink, but recently he’s brought his love affair with coffee to the party, and amongst his other art will be showcasing a series of paintings done strictly with ink and coffee at the Cup N’ Cork this Friday. He’ll be at the coffeehouse painting and drawing all evening, chatting about that most beloved beverage, and taking commissions for a coffee recreation of your childhood home or other favorite locale.
