FY16 Annual Grants Reach 360 Organizations

The Missouri Arts Council is awarding 360 annual grants for fiscal year 2016 for a total of $4,215,028 to support arts events, performances, education, and services throughout the state.
The complete list, organized by cities, is in About MAC / Who We Are on our website. As is always our goal, our grants support the richness and diversity of the arts in Missouri, from Fine Linen Drama in St. James and the Boys Choir of Springfield, to Gitana Productions in St. Louis and KC Women in Film. The grantees include 33 community arts agencies and arts councils such as the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri and the Kirksville Arts Association.
We are always seeking to serve as many Missouri arts organizations as possible. Our total of 360 annual grants is up from 337 in FY15, 336 in FY14, and 331 in FY13. To explore all types of the grants we have available and learn how to apply for them, go to our grant application website.
In addition to the annual grants, throughout this fiscal year we will also award approximately an additional $350,000 via monthly grants. These grants support smaller scale projects primarily in arts education, community arts, minority arts, and performances by artists in our Missouri Touring Directory.
During the 2015 fiscal year that concluded June 30, our annual and monthly grants totaled $4.9 million to support programs by 600 organizations in 163 Missouri communities.
Our total FY16 budget of $5.8 million supports the grants, all other programs and services, and the administration of the Council. Sources of funding include an appropriation of $4.8 million from the Governor and legislature, $696,800 from the National Endowment for the Arts, and most of the remaining balance in the Missouri Arts Council Trust Fund.
Interim Reports Due September 14 If you are a grant recipient, please note that the online deadline for the Interim Report is 11:59 p.m. on Monday, September 14. Be sure to review the Grant Requirements Checklist, and to notify the Governor and your State Legislators of your grant.

We Want Your 50 Seconds of Art

What better way to celebrate the Missouri Arts Council’s 50th anniversary year than to highlight the arts we exist to serve? We want to showcase just how lively the arts in Missouri are, and for that we want videos from you! They don’t need to be movie-length. In fact, we’re looking for just 50 seconds.
Your video of 50 seconds of art can feature any artistic medium. You can send a clip you already have or shoot something new on your phone. A performance of theatre, music, dance, spoken word – a collage of visual art pieces – a panorama of public art – a few moments from a film – scenes at a public event. The only parameter we’re setting is the 50-second timing.
Post your 50-second video on Facebook or Twitter and tag it as #MAC50. Or, if your file is 18MB or less, you can email it to us at moarts@ded.mo.gov. If it’s larger, you can place it in Dropbox and email us the link.
We’ll be featuring a selection of the videos on our website in the redesign that we will have completed by the end of the year.

How prepared for emergencies is your organization? Leah Hamilton, former director of the Springfield Regional Arts Council, is conducting a scholarly research project to assess how the arts are doing in the realm of emergency preparedness. She’s asking arts administrators to weigh in. Her survey is anonymous but includes an option to leave contact information if you’d like her to share her research results with you.

This blend of science fiction, fantasy, and Victorian history is becoming so popular that Missouri even has a new three-day festival devoted to the genre, the annual Big River Steampunk Festival in historic downtown Hannibal on Labor Day Weekend. Photographer Karen Martino caught up with steampunk performers and fans on Hannibal’s Main Street at the inaugural fest last year.
