Executive Director’s Letter

Martha Greer visited with artists at the recent Plattsburg Artists Coalition Exhibit. She ran into Roger Cissner, member of Northland Exposure, BOMH corporate member.

Every time I sit down to write my newsletter article,  I consider what I should write about.  Not so this time around – I want to share how strongly I feel about the value BOMH provides artists and artisans of our state.

Not too long ago, I spoke to a group of artists.  Before I began talking, one  of the attendees eyed me somewhat suspiciously, and asked me what I was trying to sell  (you know who you are!)  “Nothing!,” I answered honestly.  “I am here to share the opportunities available through BOMH!”  After I discussed our programs, opportunities and activities, he must have agreed, because he is now one of our Juried Members!

I truly believe that BOMH provides artists access to  invaluable opportunities to learn and to connect with a broad community of artists, to become inspired and to increase skills in a variety of creative and professional ways. That being said – much of what you will  get out of the organization depends directly on what you put into it.  A library will not read books for you, a gym will not lift weights for you and BOMH alone will not make you succeed as an artist, but will offer tools and opportunities that can help you succeed in a way that is meaningful to you. If you utilize the resources available to you through BOMH, you will not be disappointed.

2013 will see BOMH increase opportunities to serve more of its members. We have maintained successful programs  and member opportunities but have developed partnerships that will allow us to provide more opportunities for the work of our members to be seen around the state, within their own regions and  in diverse settings including galleries and  new  events.  One of our members recently expressed that she would be interested in juried membership, but felt that she didn’t have a large enough body of work to participate in many Juried BOMH events.  I was excited to share the many opportunities ahead and she was too!  I am rewarded by knowing that our efforts to understand and react to the needs of our members is resulting in great things.  I am thrilled to know that these increased opportunities will also offer BOMH the chance to provide more educational outreach activities as well, as we plan to incorporate artist school and community visits into events.

But don’t just take it from me – just read over this newsletter for the good news – check out the new membership referral award, consider purchasing an artist friend a membership for the holidays! Let’s work together to grow BOMH and stengthen the artistic community of Missouri!

Have a wonderful and safe holiday season!

Martha Greer
