Fifth Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit – Cape Girardeau, MO

Cape Girardeau Announces Fifth Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition on Broadway, Beginning in April

Cape Girardeau, Mo.  – The Public Art Committee of the City of Cape Girardeau will launch the city’s Fifth public art outdoor sculpture exhibition on Thursday, April 12. The show consists of seven substantial pieces to be placed along the Broadway Corridor in Cape Girardeau for one year, culminating in early April 2019.

Glenn Williams juried the 2018 Cape Girardeau Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit, with input from the Public Art Committee; a group that consists of representatives from the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, Old Town Cape Inc., City of Cape Girardeau, and Chris Wubbena, Area Head of Sculpture at Southeast Missouri State University.  Williams is this year’s juror and is a native of St. Louis, MO. He received his M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with an emphasis in Sculpture. After completing his degree, he was invited to join the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Northwest Missouri State University where he served as the Sculpture Area Head from 2003-2017. Currently, he is an Associate Professor of Art and Head of the Sculpture Program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

By hosting the Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit on Broadway, the Committee hopes to achieve two primary goals: increase the number of arts-related activities within the region and provide an additional revitalization strategy for Old Town Cape Inc.

“This is a wonderful exhibition and is unique to the Southeast Missouri Region,” said Sara Steffens, Director of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri. “This exhibition is our fifth one to date, and it evolves with each year. I am delighted to see how well received the sculptures have been in our community. I think the residents and business owners in our community will really appreciate the difference in the kind of sculptures that were chosen this year by our juror.”

The seven artists selected for the exhibition are:

  • Ben Pierce – Cape Girardeau, MO
  • Carl Billingsley – Lawton, OK
  • Mike Baur – West Chicago, IL
  • Andrew Arvanetes – Bradley, IL
  • Craig Snyder – Plymouth, MN
  • Richard Herzog – Athens, GA
  • Alex Mendez – Decatur, IN

The pieces will be unveiled at a special reception and kick-off event at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 12th at the Vasterling Suites Courtyard, located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Broadway and Fountain Street (MAP). The reception will be open to the public after which participants are encouraged to walk Broadway and view the pieces.

Funding for the exhibit was provided by: City of Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department, the National Endowment for the Arts and Old Town Cape Inc.
