Greater St. Louis Art Association Newsletter – October 2015

OCTOBER  MEETING
Date:  Thursday, October 22nd

Place:   Concordia Lutheran Church
505 South Kirkwood Road
Kirkwood, MO 63122
Time:    6:30 pm – Fellowship and Refreshments
7:00 pm – Business Meeting and Program
Program:    Mosaic Artists: Kathy Rickerman and
                    Carrie Wilson

Kathy Rickerman

Self-taught and self-produced, Rickermann expanded her art, and effort, from Cherokee St., St. Louis, all the way down to a medical clinic in Guatemala and she has plans with miles to come.
From even a young age, when a particularly pretty pebble caught a twinkle in her youthful eye, Rickermann knew it can take many, many bits and pieces of rocks, wood and glass to rev up her growing foundation for an audience. In 2001 she began designing, and then selling unique coffee tables shelled with broken ceramic and glass tile, which kept Rickermann occupied for the next couple of years. The liking for incorporating a variety of materials, like the broken tile, sent doors to opportunity flinging open. Kathy gained new perceptions and experience from learning firsthand how art advances. Mirror, pebbles, unique finds, beads, bamboo, wood and ceramic are all examples of  Rickermann’s malleable material.  Her discovery of vibrant stained glass, hand cut glass, and other mosaic tesserae taught her the pleasure of being able to have such control over what is portrayed in her final work. These techniques are used in her contemporary works today.
Kathy Rickermann founded the Gateway Mosaic Artist Association in 2010  to encourage and bring artists together to create a social and educational group, and to represent art culture, for the area.  Along with the education offered, the association plans group charity projects once a year.
Recent projects of Rickermann mostly pertain to custom mosaics and intricate design, including several large mosaics around the St Louis area.   In 2014 Kathy was invited to be a resident artist at the Green Door Art Gallery in Webster Groves.
Creating a relation between two foreign pieces is what gives Rickermann the motivation to spread the joy of her art and its opportunities to foreign places that could be in need. Kathy Rickermann believes that mosaic and education could rid poverty and distress, and hopes her efforts will inspire others to learn the creative art of mosaic.
Carrie Wilson
Carrie Wilson, of the St. Louis area, has emerged from her Webster Groves community as a fast-growing, diverse, and imaginative artist, with a career oriented around her passion for mosaic. Wilson is self employed and currently holds a position of residency at the Green Door Art Gallery; located in down town Webster Groves. In addition, Wilson is a member of the Gateway Mosaic Artist Association. She lives with her husband and children, who offer daily inspiration for her pieces and work.
Throughout her life, Wilson has found joy in every glance of art; particularly, the art of Mosaic.  Over the past five years, she has made many accomplishments and has gathered much experience with fellow mosaic artists: collaborating in community mosaic projects, attending workshops, and studying further in the teachings of Mosaics.  Carrie Wilson works to create what she envisions.  Success was found when work was devoted to the increasing demand of admirers requesting specific, unique, private commissions; for example: mosaic hanging portraits, indoor kitchen/bath floor, wall installations, and outdoor water features/sculptures. Mosaic allows diversity, in size, color, texture, and shape; Wilson is provided with this and manipulates her material to further portray not just the design, but to convey her intended purpose and meaning.
This past year, Carrie was invited to be a resident artist with the Green Door Art Gallery, she notes; “Being with this group of wonderful and talented artists has given me so much growth and support. I get genuine satisfaction, and get to really pursue what I love.”
Kathy and Carrie will work together presenting their art and process to the GSLAA Membership

NOVEMBER MEETING
Date:  Thursday, November 19th
(NOTE: Because of Thanksgiving, the November                   meeting is on the 3rd Thursday.)
Place:   Concordia Lutheran Church
505 South Kirkwood Road
Kirkwood, MO 63122
Time:    6:30 pm – Fellowship and Refreshments
7:00 pm – Business Meeting and Program
Program:   Greg Holden, Photographer

I love crawling around in swamps, fields full of thistle, lakes, forests, rivers, basically anywhere I can find critters and things. I use hip boots, my kayak and a bunch of insect spray to get into places accessible to everyone but rarely do I find anyone else.
I’ve traveled across the United States but decided several years ago to be a tourist at home. Most of my photography is within a mile of my home in Eureka, MO. There is so much to explore through the fresh eyes of a tourist. I used to take a place like Route 66 State Park for granted but standing quietly in the corner of the Pond watching Damsel Flies while waiting for the Sun to set has reshaped just how I see.
Recently I’ve started to learn Photoshop because my older software is not supported any longer. I do not favor heavy digital manipulation with photos. Should a photo take longer than 5-10 minutes to process, I skip it and go on to the next one.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR “SQUARE” USERS – Liability Shift Coming Soon
Credit Card Companies are quickly converting their credit cards to a “chip” system.  “On October 1st, if you swipe the magstrip on the back of a chip card instead of “dipping the chip”, the liability for certain kinds of fraud shifts from the bank to you.” (Square website)  Square doesn’t want you to be liable. So they created a new chip card reader that connects wirelessly to your point of sale.
If you use Square, protect yourself.  Go to the Squareup website to see the new “chip” readers and other valuable information about the liability shift.
Thanks to Greg Kluempers for passing on this information!

FEATURED ARTIST – JAN BUESCHING
Collected by Jan Buesching from around the world, the recycled natural corks, foils, caps, cages, and polished wine bottle glass used in these intricate original mosaic compositions provide exceptional beauty, interest, and personality.  These hand-cut and assembled pieces are believed to be found nowhere else.

Within each original mosaic, Jan strives to represent the flow of nature, the motion of life.  There is great attention used in the achievement of balance, both architecturally and dramatically.  Varying heights are used to create or dismiss shadows. Angles, sizes, shapes, and textures are employed to draw-in and then move the eye in various directions, at various speeds.  Extreme care is taken to enhance the character of every ingredient used.  Each time the viewer peruses these works, they will discover another attribute.

Jan has been constructing cork mosaics for over thirty-five years having always had a passion for art and art education.  Twenty-five years ago Jan opened Apple Hill Academy, a preschool in West County, where she loves to teach art, the more flamboyant the better. She is also a huge nerd having an extensive mineral, crystal and fossil collection, some of which she has dug herself, as she feels it is hard to surpass natural beauty.
Jan is a Juried Member of the GSLAA and the Best of Missouri Hands.  She is a resident artist of the Clayton Fine Art Gallery and the Missouri Artists on Main, in St. Charles.

MEMBER NEWS
Elaine Abramson:
Award-winning author and artist Elaine Abramson has been nominated for the Pulitzer and Nobel Prizes the second time by the National League of American Pen Women. Her From Fat to Fabulous restaurant diet series and the Thursday’s Child series were chosen for nomination because, in addition to being fun and enjoyable, her books also educate people. The National League of American Pen Women is one of the oldest (began in 1897) and one of the most prestigious organizations for creative individuals.
Thursday’s Child teaches the reader that when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. The From Fat to Fabulous fun and enjoyable restaurant diet series has been endorsed by Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry. US Senator Claire McCaskill, who  held hearings in Washington, DC to try to end questionable diets and bad diet products, has also endorsed the From Fat to Fabulous restaurant diet. It has also been endorsed by Washington University and St. Louis University dietitians.
In addition to the From Fat to Fabulous diet being a fun and enjoyable way to lose weight, Elaine and her husband discovered that the diet had other benefits. Her husband had suffered with sleep apnea for over thirty-five years. Doctors had been unable to cure him. After going on the diet, he no longer has this problem.
The third book in the  From Fat to Fabulous: A Diet Guide for Restaurant Lovers is now out. Elaine is working on the fourth book which will be out next year. Elaine has done all the artwork and photography in the books.
Kathleen Barnes:
– My oil paintings are now on display at Missouri Artists on Main, also known as MAOM. It’s a wonderful venue right in the heart of St. Charles
– I am currently teaching beginning oil painting at MAOM on Tuesday afternoons. The current class is full, but there will be more classes and workshops in the Spring!
– An exhibit of my oils, acrylics and mixed media works will be on display at the Kirkwood Train Station, 110 W Argonne Drive in Kirkwood from November 3 to November 30. An opening reception will be held on October 5 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. All are welcome.

– I have been teaching an ongoing monthly watercolor class at the Cancer Support Community in Des Peres. This has been a wonderful experience. Although I am a volunteer instructor, the rewards are amazing. My class is wait listed months ahead of time and students actually sneak in even if they are wait listed. They are always looking for volunteer art instructors and I highly recommend this experience to any of my fellow GSLAA members. You can teach one day workshops, weekly, monthly, whatever your time allows.  Contact person is Danni Hodges, 314-238-2000, ext. 249

Gary Beazley:
Gary received a Third Place Award for his painting “On Merchant Street” at the Ste Genevieve Plein Air Art Festival on September 26th.

Jan Bueshing:
The American Cancer Society has again commissioned GSLAA member Jan Buesching to create an emotional, vibrant piece emphasizing that all important pink ribbon.   The 36″ x 36″ oil and cold wax work, “Journey to Win!” was composed with tremendous honor and love!  The piece will be used Saturday, October 24, at the Forest Park “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” event.  All cancer survivors in attendance may autograph the 2″ outer wall of the ampersand panel.  The art will then be hung permanently at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge located in the Central West End.
“The pink ribbon appears to be in forward motion with the winged objects accompanying, helping and encouraging it along. Of course the ribbon taking on the human quality of running, even soaring, represents everyone fighting to win this battle. I see the winged creatures as Angels of Mercy, as I truly believe, are all who are dedicated to winning this race.  This piece is to show the path of success! The joy of winning! With all of my heart I pray this piece continually gives pride, courage, strength and inspiration!” Jan Buesching
