Midwest Clay Artists

Group Exhibit

Spiva Center for the Arts, Upstairs Gallery

September 1 – September 30, 2015

Midwest Clay Artists is proud to present their latest group exhibit. MCA is comprised of twenty-three members in Missouri and Kansas. Each year, the members gather their best pieces and display them in the gallery at Spiva, Center for the Arts in downtown Joplin. This year, the exhibit will be on display for the month of September and is titled, “Stories In Clay.”

Stories In Clay

When we are drawn to art in any media, it is invariably because the piece speaks to us. We are connecting to it in a personal way…we understand the story that the artist is trying to convey. The artists of Midwest Clay Art find that clay is an especially expressive medium to work with. Every piece shows the potter’s or sculptor’s creative markings….thumb prints, throwing rings, handle pulls, carving marks……the visual and tactile tell a story that is passed from artist to art appreciator. Clay can tell abundant stories. Is the ceramics speaking of strength and motion in a fluid sculpture? Is it delicate and full of whimsy and delight the eye? Or does the piece speak of common sense inviting you to use it daily and feel the expression of the artist as you sip your morning coffee? We hope you find many stories of joy in our latest collection.

This is a wonderful opportunity to view a variety of works. The members of MCA work tirelessly throughout the year to produce the area’s best ceramic art. A wide range of functional and sculptural pieces will be available. Take some time to see what treasures MCA has to offer.

The exhibit is located at Spiva, Center for the Arts, 222 W 3rd St in Joplin, MO. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday, 10am until 5pm and Sunday, 1pm until 5pm. A reception for the exhibit will be held in the second floor board room on Friday, September 18th from 5:30pm until 7:30pm. Spiva can be contacted at 417.623.0183 for more information.
