SRAC WEEKLY UPDATE ON ARTS IN OUR REGION |
|
The SRAC is happy to open the 2015 Arts and Culture Grants cycle in partnership with the Community Foundation of the Ozarks (CFO). The program provides nearly $20,000 in funding support, collaborative partnership opportunities, and program assistance for nonprofit arts and cultural organizations that are members of the SRAC.
The Arts and Culture Grants are made possible by donor funds designated to support arts and culture at the CFO. The grants are intended to support the goals of the Springfield Cultural Plan and the issues identified in the Community Focus Report for Springfield-Greene County such as audience development, sustainable funding, and capacity building.
Proposals are accepted from either existing or emerging, community-focused arts or cultural agencies which, for purposes of eligibility, are defined as newly formed or existing organizations that may be re-structuring, re-branding, or re-defining their artistic or cultural missions. SRAC member organizations within its 27-county service area are eligible to apply.
Category 1 transforming grants of up to $4,000 are available for organizations with less than a $150,000 operating budget. Category 2 grants of up to $1,500 are available to organizations on a competitive basis, regardless of operational budget size. Both categories require matching funds which can include in-kind support.

Art and science converge at the 8th annual “Pure Enjoyment” exhibit |
The SRAC in cooperation with Arts Rolla announces the return of “Pure Enjoyment,” a juried and eclectic exhibition of original art sponsored by Brewer Science. The exhibition will take place at The Creamery Arts Center from October 2-29, 2015. Brewer Science will host a reception at The Creamery for the artists and guests during First Friday Art Walk on October 2 from 5:00pm-8:00pm.
What makes people happy? The SRAC, Arts Rolla, and Brewer Science hope to answer that question with this exhibition appropriately titled “Pure Enjoyment.” The exhibition includes more than 120 original works of art, including photography, mixed media, and dimensional art.
Artist and juror Denene Taliaferro selected pieces that reflect the joys of the 68 participating artists from 36 different cities across the state.
“Our customers sometimes ask why Brewer Science, a global technology company, would have a passion to promote original artwork,” said Dr. Terry Brewer, founder and CEO of Brewer Science, Inc. “We believe the creativity in art and the creativity in scientific and technological innovations are closely related. Supporting opportunities in our community that stimulate originality, creativity, and diversity is part of Brewer Science’s mission. Cultural events such as those provided through the arts enrich communities and create opportunities for economic and personal growth.”

Vanya ans Sonia and Masha and Spike
At SCT’s Center Stage
Friday-Sunday, September 25-27
College friends Julie Bloodworth, Jack Laufer (Masters of Sex, Mad Men), and Oscar nominee Tess Harper (Crimes of the Heart, Tender Mercies, Breaking Bad) will reunite as the three siblings in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, Durang’s utterly hilarious and occasionally touching riff on the plays of Anton Chekov. Middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia share a home in Bucks County, PA, where they bicker and complain about the circumstances of their lives. Suddenly, their movie-star sister, Masha, swoops in with her new boy toy, Spike. Old resentments flare up, eventually leading to threats to sell the house. |
Grease
At Springfield Little Theatre
Friday-Sunday, September 25-27
Here is Rydell High’s senior class of 1959: duck tailed, hot-rodding “Burger Palace Boys” and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking “Pink Ladies” in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head “greaser” Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their “Summer Nights” as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through such songs as “Greased Lightnin'”, “It’s Raining on Prom Night”, and “Alone at the Drive-In Movie”. An 8-year run on Broadway and two subsequent revivals along with innumerable school and community productions place Grease among the world’s most popular musicals. |
