This week the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host their first Red Light Night with the topic “Naughty Margins.”
Dr. Joni Hand, Assistant Professor of Art History at Southeast Missouri State University, will lead “Naughty Margins.” Her discussion will focus on scandalous illustrations discovered in the margins of medieval manuscripts and religious texts. Dr. Hand will show examples of these naughty margins as she discusses why medieval people reveled in these frivolous additions to their prayer books.
Along with conversation surrounding medieval manuscripts, we will also have period-related music played on the lute! Our lutenist for the evening will be Daniel Atwood, a musician who last performed at the Arts Council in fall 2014 on acoustic guitar.
Red Light Night is a series of after-hours discussions on controversial and taboo topics within the arts. Red Light Nights will be presented by guest lecturers and panelists at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri in Downtown Cape Girardeau on select Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. Please note, topics and discussion are intended for a mature audience.
